SRINAGAR — Today, the Indian Uyghur Society (IUS) joins the people of India in commemorating Gandhi Jayanti, the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, the enduring symbol of India’s freedom struggle and one of history’s greatest exponents of truth and non-violence. Marked each year on 2 October, Gandhi Jayanti is not only a national holiday in India but is also observed globally as the International Day of Non-Violence, underscoring Gandhi’s universal legacy.

Gandhi’s philosophy of peaceful resistance, moral courage, and unwavering commitment to justice continues to inspire movements for human rights around the world. For the Uyghur people and other Turkic communities suffering mass detention, enforced disappearance, and systematic repression in East Turkistan, Gandhi’s example offers a beacon of hope that principled, non-violent struggle can awaken the conscience of humanity and help dismantle systems of oppression.

“On Gandhi Jayanti, we remember that true strength lies not in domination, but in steadfast adherence to truth and non-violence,” said Wasim Abdullah, President of the Indian Uyghur Society. “Mahatma Gandhi showed that even the most powerful empires can be challenged through peaceful resistance. In that same spirit, we appeal to India and the international community to stand against the Uyghur genocide and to champion the rights and dignity of the people of East Turkistan.”

The Indian Uyghur Society calls on all people of conscience to honor Gandhi’s memory not only with ceremonies and tributes, but with concrete solidarity for persecuted communities everywhere. On this Gandhi Jayanti, IUS renews its faith that, through non-violent action and moral clarity, justice will prevail for Uyghurs and for all who strive for freedom and human rights.
