Indian Uyghur Society Urgently Appeals to Stop Deportation of Three Uyghur Refugees from India

SRINAGAR — The Indian Uyghur Society (IUS) is urgently calling on all human rights organizations, humanitarian foundations, and concerned institutions worldwide for immediate support to prevent the refoulement (forced return) of three Uyghur brothers — Adil, Abduhaliq, and Abdusalam Tursun — who have been held in Indian detention for more than a decade after fleeing persecution in 2013.

The three brothers escaped China’s repression in East Turkistan in search of safety, yet remain in prolonged detention in India and now face an imminent risk of deportation back to China, where they would be exposed to grave threats to their liberty, physical security, and lives. International human rights norms strictly prohibit refoulement to a country where individuals face a real risk of torture, persecution, or other serious human rights violations, making urgent preventative action both a moral and legal imperative.

“Our community has done everything within its limited means to protect these men from being returned to danger,” said Wasim Abdullah, President of the Indian Uyghur Society. “For over ten years, Adil, Abduhaliq, and Abdusalam have suffered behind bars despite seeking refuge, and sending them back to China would amount to a death sentence.”

The Indian Uyghur Society’s dedicated legal advisor, Mr. Muhammad Shafi Lassu, has worked tirelessly to challenge the deportation orders and defend the brothers’ basic rights, but IUS is critically under-resourced and cannot sustain this complex legal struggle alone. The organization stresses that without rapid international partnership, funding, and legal support, it will be impossible to secure lasting protection for the brothers.

IUS therefore appeals to all human rights organizations, refugee protection agencies, philanthropic foundations, and governments to intervene without delay to secure third-country resettlement for the Tursun brothers in a safe and friendly nation, and to lobby for the granting of asylum status and immediate release in India as an essential interim protection measure. Their fate now depends on the speed and strength of the international response, and the Indian Uyghur Society urges all supporters to share this appeal widely and to contribute resources to sustain the ongoing legal fight for their safety, freedom, and dignity.
